Popular culture can be defined as well-liked media, made by the people, for the people, and anything ‘leftover’ from the high-class culture such as classical music or theatre

Cultural proximity is the theory that claims people have “…the tendency to prefer media from one’s own culture or the most similar possible culture.” (Straubhaar, 2003, p. 85). This would explain why Australians such as myself engage with Netflix, which streams predominantly Western media. The popularity is explained by how closely our cultures are linked. It makes sense that America has such a large impact on Australia, both our cultures are western and have similar values, and our government tends to follow the decisions of America. Alas, the term ‘Americanisation’ could be used.

As an SHS student, I want my community to think more mature for not just us to grow but also our country

As a SHS student, the change that I would like to see on my community is the changing of each and everyone’s mindset about crab mentality. Having that kind of mindset makes us more immature, it wouldn’t let our community change because they always think about ‘ if I can’t have it, neither can you. ‘. Crab mentality makes things more difficult since it is a habit that hinders people to grow.

I am ever so excited to start writing blogs and putting my thoughts on paper to clear my brain. It will be exciting to see my writing improve, as well as, my attitudes, dialect and interests. I am excited to read back on blogs and see my essence at that time captured in what I have written. I also hope to help others and provide value from what I have learned and my experiences. Each of my kids feels the loss of their dad in a different way, and I feel helpless in that I know this is something I can’t fix for them. My boy, who was 5 when his dad died, can still recall the life he had with him. There is both joy and sadness in those memories, and also a fear of losing someone else he cares about. My daughter, who was only 2 1/2, only really knows a life without a daddy. She begins to notice at daycare and then at school, that she is one of the only kids without one, and so she asks me if we can “find” her a dad…as if it is as simple as putting an ad in the paper, picking the best option and inserting him into our lives without there being any expectations on me with this man.

When I’m 25, I want to look back and be proud of my decisions

Growing up, my sister and I had to take care of ourselves because both our parents work. And after observing the dynamic at home, we formed our own opinions about the way relationships work. I guess that’s why, while I always say I wish I had someone I hold particularly dear to my heart, I’m completely okay with being on my own because I hate the thought of having to baby a man who isn’t in tune with his emotions, or one who is awfully insensitive. Spare me the anguish.

I proudly drive foreign cars (Mazdas), wear whatever I want and whenever I want, got a sleeve tattoo at 19, and even made a blog to post about whatever is on my mind. Who knows, maybe I’m totally out of the box with these things, but it did come from four miserable years of observation in highschool hallways. It’s where the most drama is at.

We started the workout, and the warmup began. He watched me do a jump rope action as well as high knees and attempted both. I wish I had recorded it but the pure joy I got out of watching him try to jump and then step those tiny knees as high as he could was perfection. He was so proud of himself to keep up with me and what we were mimicking on the TV.
