Popular culture can be defined as well-liked media, made by the people, for the people, and anything ‘leftover’ from the high-class culture such as classical music or theatre

Cultural proximity is the theory that claims people have “…the tendency to prefer media from one’s own culture or the most similar possible culture.” (Straubhaar, 2003, p. 85). This would explain why Australians such as myself engage with Netflix, which streams predominantly Western media. The popularity is explained by how closely our cultures are linked. It makes sense that America has such a large impact on Australia, both our cultures are western and have similar values, and our government tends to follow the decisions of America. Alas, the term ‘Americanisation’ could be used.

Speaking up is a very scary thing to do, especially when you’re going against the norms or the only one speaking up. But I’ve also learned this year that sometimes in situations by not speaking up at all, your silence can speak numbers and it can seem you agree with something that is wrong. And sometimes you will have to speak up and stand up. In the TED talk by Cathrine Sandland, she does a really amazing job explaining why we need to speak up when things are too important to stay silent. I like to believe I’m slowly gaining confidence in my voice and speaking up when it matters most to me and others.

I have come to realize we are all more similar than different. Our clothing may be different. We may have different shades of skin color. Use different money. Speak different languages. Some have plenty. Some not enough.

But we all bleed red. We all have same basic needs. To feel valued. Important. Loved. And we all respond to Gratitude. Human touch. And kindness.
